Acyclovir

Acyclovir is commonly seen as an ointment that treats herpes infections of the lip, skin and genitals, shingles and chicken pox. It is also available as a tablet, capsule or liquid to take by mouth.

Topical Acyclovir decreases the itchiness and pain associated with active herpes sores, as well as promotes healing when the early symptoms first appear. Oral Acyclovir reduces the regularityand harshness of recurring infections. To avoid spreading the virus to other areas of your body, always wear gloves when rubbing the ointment directly on the skin.

Side effects from Acyclovir are not commonly reported. However, burning, itchiness and rash have appeared in rare cases.

Acyclovir may sometimes be used for other conditions, as prescribed by your doctor.
