Amitriptyline HCL

Amitriptyline HCL is a tricyclic antidepressant that is used to treat depression symptoms. It works by activating certain natural substances in the brain that help to regulate and balance brain activity.

It comes as an oral tablet that usually can be taken one to four times every day persistently, as prescribed by your doctor. It may take up to four weeks before you begin to feel a change in your body or feel the full benefits of this drug.

The most common side effects from taking Amitriptyline HCL include dizziness, dry mouth, headache, drowsiness, weakness, unpleasant taste, nausea, weight gain, diarrhea, excess sweating or increased appetite.

Amitriptyline HCL may also be applied to soothe chronic pain or other medical problems, as suggested by your doctor.

Does anyone know the drug used before amitripyline went generic? I used that drug and had much better results with it but they discontinued making it. Amitriptyline makes me very drowsy. I have used it as a sleep aid but I feel too droogy to use it all the time. The non generic drug did not make me feel that way.

I have been taking this medicine for a long long time, for nerve problems. but recently I have noticed a clear discharge from my breasts. The dr. says that is one of the side effects. I dont believe that is true.

I take this for migraines. I tried to get off of it cold turkey and it thru me into a literal head spin. I couldn't get out of bed and could only hold my head in one position. I was stupid and tried to quit on my own. I started taking the pills again after a week in bed and the symptoms went away in a couple of days. I have weight gain and it is almost impossible to lose weight on this drug. But works great for my migraines. Makes me sleepy too.

Yes, it has withdrawal symptons and they are not pleasent (I have been on this for 20 years). You should wean off the medication slowly. It is going to take me a year to get off my 100 mg. daily dose. It has taken me 6 months to drop down to 50 mg. daily. Be cautious when going off the medication. Kaye
