Lopressor , also known as metoprolol, can be used alone or in combination with other medications in the treatment of high blood pressure and angina (chest pain). Controlling high blood pressure assists in the prevention of heart attacks, strokes and kidney problems.
Lopressor comes in the form of regular tablets or extended release tablets. This type of medication works by slowing the heart rate so the blood vessels can relax. Once the blood vessels are relaxed, the blood can move more easily which reduces the stress on the heart.
Common side effects Lopressor include lightheadedness, depression, fatigue, dry mouth, upset stomach, dizziness, heartburn and constipation. If you are experiencing more severe side effects such as wheezing, unusual weight gain and fainting, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Occasionally, Lopressor may be prescribed to improve survival after the patient has suffered a heart attack. It may be prescribed for other purposes as well, as directed by your doctor.
