Valtrex, also known as valacyclovir, is an antiviral medication used in individuals with properly functioning immune systems to treat shingles or suppressed genital herpes. It is also used in combination with sexual protection in patients with genital herpes in order to decrease the likeliness of spreading the virus.
Valtrex does not cure genital herpes, it simply decreases the pain and itching caused by active herpes sores, helps the sores to heal and prevents new sores from forming.
This drug is taken orally in the form of tablets. Common side effects associated with Valtrex include headaches, upset stomach, constipation, vomiting and diarrhea.
Occasionally, Valtrex is used for other purposes, as directed by your doctor.
